Popular Bollywood actor, Ayushmann Khurrana celebrates his 40th birthday on September 14, 2024. This incredible actor has given us some amazing films with unconventional stories, important social messages, and unforgettable performances throughout his career. Whether you watch Ayushmann Khurrana movies online or prefer to watch him on the big screen, his contribution to the Hindi cinema is undeniable. Today, on his special day, let’s take a moment to look back on his journey and remember some of his iconic characters and movies.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s filmography is filled with quirky, thought-provoking films that challenge social norms. Three of our most Ayushmann Khurrana films that showcase his versatility are- Dream Girl, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.

Karam aka Pooja from Dream Girl

Dream Girl has been one of the most iconic names in the Hindi film industry since 1977. However, Ayushmann Khurrana gave this name a whole new meaning with his brilliant performance in the 2019 film Dream Girl. In this movie, Ayushmann Khurrana takes on one of his most outlandish and entertaining roles ever. He plays the role of Karamveer Singh aka Karam, a man from a small town with a unique talent. What’s that talent you ask? He can flawlessly impersonate a woman’s voice.

Now Karam is down on funds, and the only job he gets is at a call center where he must pose as “Pooja” to talk to customers. Soon, he becomes the star employee, with several men and even one woman falling in love with Pooja.  Ayushmann skillfully switching between his male and female identities making it a fun watch for the audience. However, this film is not all comedy. While it is filled with laugh-out-loud moments, the film also subtly critiques societal norms around masculinity and loneliness. And that’s what made Dream Girl such a successful film that it led to a sequel with Ayushmann Khurrana in lead.

Chirag Dubey aka Pritam Vidrohi from Bareilly Ki Barfi

In Bareilly Ki Barfi, Ayushmann Khurrana portrays Chirag Dubey, a bookstore owner and aspiring writer in the small town of Bareilly. The story revolves around Bitti Mishra played by Kriti Sanon, a rebellious, free-spirited girl who finds solace in a novel that seems to describe her perfectly. She embarks on a quest to find the book’s author, Pritam Vidrohi. However, she’s unaware of the fact that Chirag is the real author who wrote the novel under a friend’s name. Soon, Chirag falls in love with her while Bitti falls for the real Pritam Vidrohi(Rajkummar Rao).

This film is a refreshing take on small-town romances, with Ayushmann delivering a nuanced performance as a man caught between love and his own insecurities. His character, Chirag, is flawed – he manipulates situations to win Bitti’s heart. However, it is his vulnerability and charm that makes him relatable. The film’s strong narrative and its blend of humor and romance make Bareilly Ki Barfi a favorite among Ayushmann Khurrana’s fans.

Mudit Sharma from Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan stands out for tackling the sensitive issue of erectile dysfunction with humor and heart. Ayushmann plays Mudit Sharma, a man who is deeply in love with Sugandha(Bhumi Pednekar), and they decide to get married. However, their relationship hits a snag when Mudit discovers he has erectile dysfunction just before the wedding.

The film’s brilliance lies in how it uses humor to talk about taboo topics, especially those related to sexual health in a conservative society. Ayushmann’s portrayal of Mudit is empathetic and real. He perfectly captures the awkwardness and embarrassment that come with the condition. His chemistry with Bhumi Pednekar brings a lot of warmth to the film, making it a relatable story of love, acceptance, and breaking stereotypes. While the movie is a light-hearted comedy, it’s also a social commentary on the pressure placed on men regarding sexual performance and masculinity. It received critical acclaim for handling such a delicate issue in an engaging and respectful manner.
